New Year, New Business? Things no one tells you when you work for yourself.

Just got back from Cabo to do a content calendar as a team along with some other amazing business owners and team members and we are ready to take on the new year! One participant couldn't sleep when they got home due to pure excitement! Yes, we are talking about you Covert Results! If you are ready to take the “leap of faith” by starting your new business or if you are an established business looking for some tips for the new year, you're in the right place!

Tip 1: Don't be lonely! Surround yourself with inspiring and positive people and find a group of entrepreneurs. This is a good way to avoid talking to the wall!

Tip 2: There are many entrepreneur Facebook groups you can join. You may notice that you start to loose friends because they cant relate and don't have so much in common with you.

Tip 3: How do you manage your time? You think you will have so much time, but you really need to calendar block and set boundaries with clients so you are not working 24/7, it is just not healthy! If I could tell my younger self (15 years ago), anything, I would tell her sleep is important. If you don't take care of yourself how can you help someone else.

Tip 4: What do you tell people when they ask about your business? You know, that all so common questions of “what DO you do?” It is important to work on a 30 second elevator speech. This way people know exactly how you solve a problem. One inspiration is an awesome book written by Donald Miller titled Story Brand.

Tip 5: Once you start blocking your time, trust me you will start to breathe MUCH easier. For me personally, we try to do 2 days a week for back to back meetings, on these days I make sure to allocate time to wear makeup and dress nice, the rest of the time I am wearing t-shirts and yoga pants. Prioritizing is key! Another good way to time block and make the most out of your time is to consider getting Zoom and doing a video call in place of an in person meeting. This saves you so much time and helps you avoid running all over all day long. When considering transportation, consider this; I live in downtown nashville and it is cheaper for me to Uber to meetings when clients want to meet in person, not only do I not have to find a parking spot and pay unpredictable amounts for parking, but I can even get work done while I am in route!

Tip 6: If it were easy everyone would do it. There will be days where you will be frustrated and overwhelmed. You will at times encounter confused clients; as a psychology major it usually isn't about you, there is always something else going on and they may just be taking it out on you. True entrepreneurs work at their best when they are able to be creative and it IS scary but you have to take the leap! From personal experience if you are working a part time job and not focusing you will never know what hard work is until you have to work hard to put food on the table.  I worked 3 jobs until I finally understood the power of being focused. It is so importation to invest in your business to help it grow.
