How Shocking Your Body with Heat and Cold Can Transform Your Health

As someone who's now focused (slightly obsessed 🫣) on feeling my best both physically and mentally, I’ve explored countless wellness practices to understand how they personally impact me. I do this so I can share what’s worked for me, giving you the tools to achieve the same results and feel your best too. I’ve been on this journey since 2003, and I’m finally comfortable and confident enough to share how shocking your body with hot and cold temperatures can benefit you. 🔥❄️

This is for all you control freaks out there. If you love a good plan and crave control because you want to optimize the experience, I get it! I’m that girl too! But what I’ve learned is that, as Ryan Holiday writes in one of his books (and I totally agree 💯), pushing yourself to get a little uncomfortable teaches you a different kind of control. It will help you let go of things you can’t change. Like a wedding planner planning an outdoor wedding—you can’t control the weather; Mother Nature does. You can plan for a backup, rent tents, or secure generators, but the bottom line is you’re only in control of so much. So choose where to put your energy. ⚡️

When you go through hard things, you start looking for different answers. That’s when I started searching for wellness practices that could help reset my body and mind. And so, I began exploring places where I could truly reset and rejuvenate, including experiences like the ones Framework offers. 🧘‍♀️✨

Now, I’ve started taking meetings at places where you can become a member, and my goal is to go twice a week. After each session, you will feel incredibly relaxed. Words can’t fully describe the effect it has on you. But to get the most out of it, there's one key element you need to learn: breathwork. You need to control your breath and learn how to focus on counting because if you can’t do that, you won’t fully experience the benefits.

I had an absolute blast with muralist and fitness influencer from Mighty Fine Artistry, Amanda Hilsabeck, when she came to Nashville to experience the GSD Wellness Code. Our first meeting was in the sauna and the cold plunge, where we booked a private room. We worked through breathwork together, and it was such a powerful experience. But if you ask her what it was like, she’ll tell you all about it.

From my personal experiences with biohacking, to pushing myself to embrace new ways of staying healthy, I’ve found that it’s the small changes that make the biggest impact. Whether it’s making time to move, fueling your body with the right nutrients, or experimenting with wellness trends, every step can lead you to feel more empowered and rejuvenated. 🌱💪

Our Experience at Framework

When I was looking for a brand to collaborate with in my hometown of Nashville, I knew it was important to prioritize the customer journey, communication, and overall brand experience. So when people fly in to experience the GSD Wellness Code with me, as I train them through the 8 Pillars of Wellness, I want their experience to be unforgettable. When the Framework team responded to us via Instagram, it was a game-changer. I started chatting with the owner, Allen, about wellness, and I loved spending time with the team. I quickly realized that Framework was the perfect place to bring my wellness experience to others. 🌟

For those unfamiliar, Framework is a social space in Nashville dedicated to sauna and cold plunge sessions. The space, founded by Allen Penn, is the perfect example of what happens when passion meets purpose. His personal journey to embrace vitality and longevity was driven by two key life events: turning 40 and becoming a father. This inspired him to create a space that prioritizes health while also fostering meaningful, in-person connections. 🤝

What I loved most about this experience was the sense of community combined with privacy. Framework has private rooms for your sauna and cold plunge sessions, but it also offers communal spaces for those who want to connect with others. The downstairs area is open for social sessions, while the upstairs has private rooms for those who prefer a more personal experience. It’s the best of both worlds! You can even rent out the space for private events, making it ideal for mini wellness retreats and workshops—something we’ll be offering soon! 🎉

Why I’m All About Biohacking

If you’re not familiar with the term “biohacking,” let me just say—it’s something I’m completely obsessed with. In simple terms, biohacking is about doing one thing every day that helps optimize your mind, body, and spirit. 💡

Our experience at Framework was incredibly wonderful, and Amanda got to experience firsthand the combination of heat and cold. These practices aren’t just a trend—they’re scientifically proven to boost cardiovascular health, burn calories, and elevate your mood. But there’s so much more than that! 💯

The Benefits of Sauna & Cold Plunge

So, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of why this wellness experience works. When I stepped into Framework, I was immediately drawn to the temperature-optimized dry saunas and cold plunge sessions (there are different types, so be sure you know what you’re walking into). But beyond the immediate warmth and coolness, here are some key benefits I love:

🫀 Cardiovascular Health: Alternating between hot and cold temperatures gives your heart and circulatory system a workout. It stimulates blood flow, improves circulation, and can even reduce inflammation. It's like giving your body a natural tune-up. I personally do 15 minutes in the sauna and then spend at least 60 seconds in the cold plunge. I try to do this twice per session, always starting with the sauna to make the cold plunge a little bit easier. But again, you’ve got to do what your body needs—and the key to these things is you’ve got to learn how to breathe. I cannot stress this enough.

🔥 Caloric Burn: Believe it or not, your body burns more calories when exposed to extreme temperatures. Whether you're sweating it out in the sauna or recovering in the cold plunge, you’re doing more for your metabolism than you think.

🚀 Mood Boost: If you’ve ever stepped out of a sauna feeling on top of the world, it’s not just in your head. The rush of endorphins and adrenaline your body produces during and after these sessions can create a lasting sense of well-being.

😮‍💨 Stress Relief: We all know how stress can take a toll on our bodies. A sauna followed by a cold plunge helps reset your nervous system, relieving tension and helping balance your autonomic nervous system. You’ll feel more relaxed and centered after these sessions.
