👋Hi GSD Leader! Have you ever noticed how much easier things get when you truly understand how people perceive you?
I recently had the chance to speak at the University of South Florida for a Sales and Marketing in Hospitality course. It started with a conversation with an EO member in the hospitality industry. We were chatting about our industry and how hard it’s been since Covid to find dedicated people to work. I instantly went into solution mode, and shared with him the communication psychology framework that has helped me navigate life as a business owner and entrepreneur. You can organize personalities into four personality types or styles. It’s simple, powerful, and changes the way you communicate, work in teams, and even lead others (and most of the time this bleeds over into your personal life which by the way, how you do anything is how you do everything 😉)
During the session, we explored how these personality styles complement the trending topic these days—AI and ChatGPT. And we chatted about mindset. Instead of thinking AI will take my job, or replacing human connection, reframe! AI becomes a support system—helping us work smarter and focus on what matters.
The best part? Watching the students light up as they learned practical tools to enhance their personal and professional lives. Seeing those “aha” moments reminded me why I do what I do.
Looking back, I wish I had access to these kinds of resources in college. It’s amazing to see students gaining skills that will stick with them and make a real impact.
At the end of the class, I assigned the students homework, and one of the resulting articles is shared below. The assignment was to use ChatGPT to summarize what they learned from each session.
Discovering My True Colors: Insights from Angela Proffitt’s Lecture
By Trinity A.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a lecture by Angela Proffitt, a renowned expert in event planning and personal development. One of the most impactful concepts she introduced was the psychology framework that categorizes individuals into four distinct color types: orange, gold, blue, and green. Each color represents different personality traits and preferences, offering valuable insights into how we interact with others, especially in professional settings.
Prior to this lecture, I had never considered how personality types could influence my relationships with colleagues, particularly those in managerial positions. This realization opened my eyes to the importance of understanding not just my own personality but also those of the people I may work alongside in the future.
The Psychology Framework
This divides personalities into four colors:
🧡 Orange: The spontaneous, adventurous type, often seen as outgoing and fun-loving.
💛 Gold: The organized, dependable individual who values structure and responsibility.
💙 Blue: The empathetic and nurturing personality, focused on feelings and connections.
💚 Green: The analytical and rational thinker, often driven by logic and a desire for knowledge.
Upon completing the assessment, I discovered that my brightest personality color is green. This revelation was both enlightening and affirming, as it aligned with traits I had recognized in myself but had not fully articulated.
The Traits of a Green Personality
Being identified as a green personality means I prioritize research, analysis, and critical thinking. Greens tend to ask questions and seek understanding, often preferring to know “why” things are the way they are. This inclination toward inquiry not only reflects my academic interests but also my approach to problem-solving in everyday life. I thrive on data, case studies, and detailed explanations, which allows me to make informed decisions based on solid evidence rather than assumptions.
The contrast between greens and blues is particularly striking. While blue personalities focus on emotions and relationships, greens are more inclined to look at the facts. This difference can lead to varying approaches in team dynamics. I find that understanding this dichotomy helps me appreciate the strengths that different personality types bring to a team. While I may approach a project with a focus on data and logic, a blue might provide essential emotional insight that fosters a supportive environment.
Implications for Teamwork and Collaboration
Understanding my green personality has significant implications for how I approach teamwork and collaboration. In a professional setting, I can harness my analytical strengths to contribute to projects that require thorough research and strategic planning. However, I also recognize the importance of adapting my communication style to connect with individuals of other personality types. For instance, when working with blue personalities, I need to make a conscious effort to acknowledge their feelings and foster a sense of connection. This understanding creates a more inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, regardless of their personality type.
Moreover, being aware of the traits associated with gold personalities—who value organization and dependability—encourages me to collaborate effectively with them. Their attention to detail and planning can complement my analytical approach, leading to more comprehensive and successful outcomes. Conversely, I need to remember that oranges, with their spontaneous nature, might sometimes challenge my structured way of thinking. Learning to embrace their creativity could lead to innovative solutions that I might not have considered.
Personal Growth Through Understanding
My experience with the Personality Framework has not only deepened my understanding of myself but has also encouraged me to appreciate the diverse perspectives of those around me. This knowledge fosters a culture of empathy and respect, essential components of any successful team.
As I move forward in my academic and professional journey, I plan to utilize this insight in various ways. Whether it's in group projects, future internships, or eventual workplace scenarios, I aim to apply my analytical skills while remaining open to the emotional and creative contributions of others.
In summary, Angela Proffitt's lecture on the Personality Framework has had a profound impact on my understanding of personality dynamics in professional settings. Identifying as a green personality has provided clarity on my strengths and areas for growth. By recognizing the value of different personality types, I can foster better communication, collaboration, and ultimately, a more harmonious working environment. As I continue to develop both personally and professionally, I will carry these insights with me, striving to create spaces where every color can shine.
